Guernsey College: 50 Years and Strong
Guernsey College of Further Education is celebrating its 50th anniversary during the 2019/20 academic year.
First established in September 1969, then opened on the Coutanchez site in 1976, initially the College offered qualifications related to Apprenticeship and Adult education classes. Since then the College has grown and now offers around 300 full-time, part-time, Higher Education and Adult & Community Learning courses to students of all ages and backgrounds across the Bailiwick.
During the course of the year, the College will be marking this important landmark in a number of ways involving students, staff and the wider community. The programme of initiatives is being launched with the College offering 50% discount on 50 Adult and Community Learning courses. 50 students enrolled on courses starting this term have been selected at random to receive the discounted rate.
Claire Menzies who is taking a silver-smithing/jewellery-making course is one of the lucky 50. She commented:
“I’m a big fan of the College and the variety of night school options available - and not just because I've been surprised with a 50% discount!
“Over the last 20-odd years I've done a variety of courses and the tutors have all been fantastic. Their knowledge, dedication and enthusiasm cannot be overstated. Here's to the next 50 years of varied community education programmes, excellent teaching and fantastic support.”
College Principal Louise Misselke said:
“It’s really important that we celebrate this incredible milestone in the College’s history. The College has grown and evolved significantly since its inception 50 years ago as we have developed the courses on offer both to fulfil the education and skills needs of our local industry sectors as well as ensuring a wide range of courses for individuals. I am looking forward to the various initiatives we are planning in order to mark our 50th anniversary with both current and past students as well as supporters of the College during the coming year. It is particularly fitting that we mark the 50 years, as this is an exciting time for the College as we form part of the new Guernsey Institute.”
