Saffery Rotary Walk 2024

The 26th Saffery Rotary Walk will take place on Saturday 8th June, and this year the event is supporting 21 fantastic local charities...

So, if you fancy supporting and taking on the challenge of walking around the island on Saturday 8th June, then why not sign up for this year’s Saffery Rotary Walk by visiting their website.

Listen out for our featured charity of the day and you can find out full details of each below.

Action for Children

They deliver programmes across the community, responding to youth homelessness, and work with young people, both in the classroom and online through sites such as Parent Talk.

Donations from this year's Walk will be used to purchase starter kits for young people setting up their first home.

Autism Guernsey

Established in 2012, this non-profit organisation is dedicated to helping autistic people in Guernsey lead positive, fulfilling lives. The charity strives to educate and assist parents, carers, and professionals by sharing their expertise and resources to improve care and support for autistic people.

Using the funds they receive, the charity will have the benefit of social media scheduling software.

Bright Tights

The money raised will provide funds for the charity to build a new website and source new imagery for it.

Bright Tights aims to provide financial and practical support to those who are diagnosed and treated for gynaecological cancers and other serious gynaecological illnesses. Their vision is that no one faces cancer feeling unsupported or alone. They also provide education about the signs and symptoms of gynaecological abnormalities and support research into gynaecological cancers.

Carers Guernsey LBG

This independent charity provides support to anyone in the Bailiwick who cares for a friend or family member who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental ill health. Outreach support providers visit carers and work with them to create a tailor-made plan to provide emotional or practical help, or financial and allowances advice.

Carers Guernsey also run monthly Carers’ Drop-ins, providing a relaxed, social atmosphere for carers to get together with those in similar situations.

With the funds they receive from this year’s Walk, the charity will purchase Christmas hampers for unpaid carers.

Church of Scotland

The church's “open door” objective is to make their premises more accessible and inclusive for all.

Your donations will help to fund a specialist lift for independent access to the church and community hall.

Friends of Saumarez Park

Guernsey Wooden Spoon are supporting Friends of Saumarez Park in updating the Spider's Web climbing frame area at Saumarez Park.

Founded in 2001, this charity's vision is that, through the power of rugby, every child and young person, no matter what their background, has access to the same opportunities.

The surrounding area will also be landscaped and the support from the Saffery Rotary Walk will fund the new fencing separating the spider web play area from the stream.

Guernsey Alzheimer's Association

The primary purpose of Guernsey Alzheimer’s Association is caring for the carers of people with dementia. The core services include social activity, education, support, and respite care at home. Their respite service is provided free to carers.

The charity also holds weekly Golf, Boccia and Pickleball sessions as well as a social games afternoon, a Carer’s Support Group, Singing Down Memory Lane, and a lunch once a month.

Using the funds they receive from this year’s Walk, the charity will purchase new carpet for their meeting room.

Guernsey Arts Commission

Guernsey Arts offers a diverse range of arts experiences, networking opportunities, and events for all abilities as well as direct support to Island Artists and Bailiwick Arts Organisations. They understand the positive impact of art on people's lives, which they believe everyone should have access to.

The funds they will receive from the Saffery Rotary Walk will allow Guernsey Arts to feature multi-sensory additions for their 2024 INCLUSION project helping extend enjoyment and appreciation of the arts through multi-sensory experiences and community outreach for members of the community with disabilities, including hearing and vision loss.

Guernsey Chest & Heart LBG

The charity provides a free cardiovascular screening service for all residents of the Bailiwick between the ages of 25-75, with the aim of identifying risk factors that may contribute to cardiovascular disease.

Each screening includes blood pressure measurement, cholesterol and blood sugar checks, ECG, body composition analysis and a discussion around individual lifestyle factors. This enables the individual to make lifestyle changes to improve their health outcomes.

Using the donations they receive from this year’s Saffery Rotary Walk, the charity will purchase a medical grade cooling system for blood testing cartridges.

Guernsey Child Contact Centre LBG

When parents separate or families breakdown, children can find themselves in a situation where they have no contact with one of their parents or relatives. The GCCC offers families a safe, neutral space where children can meet parents and relatives they don’t live with.

With the donation they receive, the charity plans to refurbish their small, outdoor area to allow contact in a secure and safe outside environment.

Guernsey Friends of Maggie's

The charity's aim is to help provide cancer support care through Maggie's Southampton, which is available, at no charge, to Guernsey patients (and their carers). They principally do this by raising awareness of the services, as well as fundraising locally on a proportionate basis.

They will benefit from having a dedicated place to rest, with professional staff, to access information, group or individual support, and to meet other people with cancer in the community fostered by Maggie’s.

With your help, this charity can purchase a small second-hand van for local fundraising events.

Guernsey Mind LBG

This independent mental health charity has the aim of supporting the community by encouraging a positive attitude towards mental health and supporting mental wellbeing.

They raise awareness of the importance of mental health and challenge stigma, run a number of peer-support groups and have an extensive programme of training courses including Mental Health First Aid. They work with clients experiencing poor mental health, individually or by signposting to specialist support.

With your help, the charity can purchase and fit a publicly accessible defibrillator at their centre in Arsenal Road.

Guernsey Mobility Let's Go Group

The money raised will help fund a mini Olympics for their participants along with Year 5 at St Martins School, in the 2024 Paralympic year. This is an amazing annual event which tests participants strengths and abilities. It is supported by volunteer coaches and helpers, under the “Inclusion” programme.

Started in 2015, GMLG works in conjunction with the Guernsey Sports Commission and meets weekly to play a variety of activities such as Short Tennis, Softball, Boccia, Ten Pin Bowling, Curling and many target-based sports. People of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate free of charge.

Guernsey Rangers Football Club LBG

In 2023, they celebrated their 130th birthday, and now have over 350 players and 25 qualified coaches, ranging from 4 to over 35 years old.

From the May Super 7s tournament, with hundreds of players, to weekly matches, Rangers believes in the passion and dedication of football for all.

The funds raised in this year's walk will provide a new storage shed for the club.

Guernsey Sailing Trust LBG

The Guernsey Sailing Trust (GST) was established in 1988. It now welcomes over 2,000 children and adults through its doors each year, aiming to allow every child in the Bailiwick to experience sailing by the time they reach secondary school.

The charity also offers sailing events to the community and Sailability programmes for children and adults with neurodiversity’s or physical disabilities.

Using the funds they receive, the charity will purchase buoyancy Aids for participants.

Little Buttons Charitable Trust Pre-school

Little Buttons Pre-school provide care and support across the bailiwick to both pre-school children, and their families through many different life events. The charity's support is accessible during Pre-school hours and around the clock for families who need help, extra support or for families in crisis.

Little Buttons ensure the children are prepared and have the appropriate skills needed to continue their journey as they leave and head off to primary school.

With the donations they receive from this year’s Walk, the charity will purchase specialist removable fencing to provide segmented areas and safe play in the hall.

Royal Guernsey Light Infantry Charitable Trust

The RGLI Trust embeds positive change through cultural diplomacy. Their activities include active student exchange programmes, the development of a new educational centre, memorial rides, and the twinning of St Peter Port with France, with the aspiration of good citizenship across generations.

Initially implementing the only RGLI memorials to mark ‘Guernsey Finest Hour’, our terrible sacrifices during WW1, the charity's work continues to transform those social depravations into positive enrichment across communities and families.

With your help, the charity plans to fund a cultural exchange for 12 young people to Les Masnieres, the site of a battle with heavy losses.

Safety Night-time Economy Team

As Guernsey’s first charity seeking to make nights out safer, this charity works to educate the public, support victims and deter perpetrators of three criminal offences: sexual assault, drink spiking and harassment.

SafetyNet works in partnership with Guernsey Police, the Committee for Home Affairs, Victim Support, Willow House and licensed venues to improve safety procedures to better protect the public in Guernsey’s night-time economy.

With your support and generous donations, this charity will purchase personal safety alarms.

The Amalgamated Boxing Club

The Guernsey Amalgamated Boxing Club charity works to provide a positive focus in the community for children and adults through sport. In particular, people who are likely to be more isolated or potentially struggling with loneliness such as our over 65's group, those who have additional educational needs, or a variety of disabilities.

Over the years, through their dedicated team of coaches and volunteers, this charity has helped children and adults from different backgrounds grow in confidence, overcome behavioural or social problems, as well as provide an outlet to cope with bereavement.

Their dedicated Boxing Development Officer works closely with the welfare services, school liaison officers, schools and the Youth Commission offering one to one sessions following referrals from them.

The funds from this year’s Walk will provide four free standing boxing bags.

The Lihou Charity LBG

The charity was set up to preserve and improve Lihou House for the benefit of the general public and for those who by reason of their youth, infirmity or disablement, poverty or social and economic circumstances have a need for such facilities.

The House is available to any family, business, special interest, youth or school group, but is orientated towards school and youth groups, being primarily equipped as an educational residential hostel.

With your help, the charity will purchase new climbing equipment.

Wheels for You

With your help, the Guernsey Bicycle Group will purchase a Fun2Go trike for accessible cycling as part of the 'Wheels For You' campaign.

The goal is to create accessible cycling opportunities for individuals who are unable to ride traditional two-wheeled bicycles. The campaign envisions creating a welcoming community hub that is open one morning per week, catering to a diverse range of stakeholders.

The vision is to expand opportunities for people to engage in physical activity regularly, with cost as a major barrier removed. Wheels for You will become a thriving community hub where users build friendships and create cherished memories.
