New Street Named After Former Cinema Manager

A new street in St Helier next to the former Odeon cinema has been named after its long-time manager.

Moneypenny Lane was suggested by Charlotte Wiltcher Woodman (8) from Grouville School.

Le Masurier invited primary school students to take part in naming the new street.  It received 177 entries.

It has chosen Moneypenny Lane as a fitting nod to former cinema manager Tony Monneypenny, and for its link to the Bond films that would once have been screened there.

Mr Moneypenny is well-remembered for running the Odeon in the seventies and eighties, and islanders of a certain age will remember him stopping the film to warn unruly kids that they would have to leave the auditorium if their behaviour continued.

Once completed in November, the road will run past the new Premier Inn Hotel, Freedom Centre, and connect Bath Street with Rue de Funchal and Halkett Place.

The area was previously a private car park

Brian McCarthy from Le Masurier says there were some really imaginative entries:

"Moneypenny Lane is a very appropriate choice as it pays homage to Mr Moneypenny, the former manager of the Odeon cinema, but also accords with Miss Moneypenny from the numerous Bond films shown in the Odeon. I hope the public enjoy the open space and connectivity that Moneypenny Lane will provide."
