Police Officer Reprimanded After Homophobic Slur

A States of Jersey police officer has admitted using prejudicial language towards a group of young people following an internal investigation.

The incident, which was filmed on a mobile phone, happened in May when its understood the officer was trying to encourage the group to separate during lockdown.

He was charged by the Professional Standards Department of two counts under the disciplinary code and entered guilty pleas straight away.

The officer has been formally reprimanded and the sanction will stay on his record.

We've been told he was apologetic and fully remorseful of his comments and behaviour.

"We expect the highest professional standards by all our staff and police officers and do not condone any form of prejudicial conduct or language. We are liaising with the LGBT community regarding lessons learnt from the incident, and how we can continue to work together to protect all islanders." - Robin Smith, Chief of Police.
