Guernsey Ports say abandoned fishing tackle has got tangled in boats, harbour property and wildlife.
St Peter Port harbour is being used more often by anglers since the closure of the Castle Cornet bridge and breakwater for major repairs which will last until May 2027.
Assistant Harbour Master Mike Harris says that a small number of irresponsible anglers have left fishing gear lying around which has entangled some young gulls.
In addition, boats have had line wrapped around masts and rigging, a window on an access ramp was smashed by a fishing weight and youngsters have been spotted climbing the fish quay ladders, where public access is restricted:
"We have seen an increasing number of incidents over recent months that are creating unnecessary risks to other people, wildlife, vessels and harbour infrastructure yet almost all these issues can be avoided through a little extra care and consideration.
“We want recreational angling to remain a part of harbour life. However, if these incidents continue, we will have to consider whether additional measures or restrictions are required in some locations to protect public safety and harbour operations.
"We would much rather work with anglers and the wider community to prevent that from becoming necessary."
Tim Froome represents local fishing clubs and says they urge anglers to dispose of their gear responsibly:
“We recognise the importance of safeguarding harbour infrastructure and public safety and encourage all anglers to report vandalism, respect local rules, and help promote responsible fishing practices."
