Appointment of Guernsey's first female Bailiff

Jessica Roland will become Guernsey's first ever female Bailiff, following the approval of her appointment by His Majesty the King.

History will be made in Guernsey this autumn when Guernsey's deputy Bailiff, Jessica Roland, assumes the title of Bailiff.

She will take over from Sir Richard McMahon, who has held the role since May 2020, and, as is customary, recommended her to the Lieutenant Governor as his successor.

Jessica Roland was born in Guernsey in 1969 and went to the Forest Primary, the Grammar School and the Atlantic College in south Wales to study the International Baccalaureate.

She studied for her degree at Sussex University, the College of Law in York and at Caen University in Normandy.

Jessica Roland worked in England as a solicitor before returning to Guernsey to become an advocate in July 1999.

She has been a managing partner at a Guernsey law firm and was made deputy Bailiff in May 2020.

Her appointment as Bailiff by 'Letters Patent under the Great Seal of England' is until she reaches the age of 68.

The role dates back to 1278 when Guernsey's first Bailiff was appointed.
