Beau Sejour remaining shut over weekend

Beau Sejour is staying shut this weekend (19 & 20 September), as work continues to eradicate Legionella bacteria detected in the water system.

It was found on Monday (14 September), at which point the showers were immediately closed.

Further investigations led to the centre being closed the following day (15 September), with work beginning to identify the cause.

The aim was to have it open in time for the weekend, but the States of Guernsey said it isn't possible for a couple of reasons.

"Teams have been working as hard as possible to reopen the Centre, however, the combination of the system disinfection work which is ongoing and filter equipment due to arrive in the island imminently, means that reopening is not currently possible.

"The team would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the patience and understanding of the Beau Sejour community. The safety of visitors is the absolute priority, and the Centre will not reopen until there is confidence that the issue is resolved."

It means today's scheduled 'The Music of Tina Turner' show, and tomorrow's scheduled 'Paws for Support' dog show have been cancelled.

Exposure to Legionella bacteria can cause Legionnaire's disease, a type of pneumonia caused when contaminated droplets are inhaled.

No cases have been detected in the community, with Public Health, GPs, and the Emergency Department continuing to monitor the situation.

Anyone who used the showers at Beau Sejour in the couple of weeks leading up to the closure, and develops symptoms, is being urged to get medical advice, and mention that they may have been exposed to Legionella.
