Thousands complete a survey that calls for price and cost transparency at Guernsey Electricity.
Guernsey Electricity says years of under-investment in the network is behind four successive above inflation price rises since 2022, with the standing charge, that everyone pays, going up year on year.
Generally people have put up with this, after being shielded from volatile market costs because of forward buying power from the French grid.
But that changed in June, when a protest against further price rises was held outside Guernsey Electricity's showroom.
Senior managers have since launched a survey to find out more about consumer attitudes.
Gareth Wordingham, who leads on customer care and product innovation at the States-owned utility, is impressed that 6.5% of the adult population, around 3,600 people, took part:
"Island Global Research said that it was of the largest surveys that they have ever run, and this is good because it gives us an idea of what people really want."
The price of electricity and security of supply, in other words, no power cuts, were key priorities.
Many were concerned about above inflation increases to the standing charge and Gareth Wordingham says they are listening:
"We hear that people think the standing charge is unfair, but it'll take time to make sure we get it right.
"Certainly we will use these results to make sure that what we do with any changes are reflective of what our customers are looking for."
“The next step for us is to set out a clear pathway for tariff reform, including an explanation of how fixed costs are going to be recovered.”
Guernsey Electricity is investing heavily in new infrastructure to supply an anticipated leap in demand for charging cars, e-bikes and multiple modern gadgets.
But currently, there is no ability for customers to use an app to monitor usage, something that is fairly standard in the UK market, and customer say they would like this.
The company says the results of the survey will be used when the tariff increase for 2026 is considered.
