A Blue Plaque in Market Square hopes to inform more locals about the life and work of David Robilliard.
David Robilliard was born in Guernsey in 1952.
Described by his mother as a “caged bird” on the island, David moved to London in 1975.
He pursued a career in poetry and soon began exploring art.
He published his first poetry book and opened his first artwork exhibition in 1984.
Four years later, in 1988, during the height of the UK’s AIDS epidemic, David contracted HIV and died.
Since his death, David's work has been displayed around the world, including the Tate Modern.
Despite his global success, many islanders have never heard of him - something local LGBTQ+ advocacy group Liberate wanted to change.
They nominated him for a Blue Plaque, which the panel accepted.
It will be unveiled by the Bailiff on 13 December at 3.30pm at the bottom of Clifton Steps in Market Square - near to The Little Theatre, where David first appeared on stage.
Ellie Jones, the Blue Plaque nominator from Liberate Guernsey, says it’s wonderful to see David recognised in his home island.
“David’s story is one of courage, creativity, and authenticity.
"For so long, he’s been known and celebrated internationally, but not locally - and that’s something we’ve wanted to change.
"The Blue Plaque is a powerful reminder that Guernsey has produced artists whose work has touched the world."
David’s sister, Wendy Hugh, says the family are delighted that David is getting this recognition.
"David was an observer of life around him and had an intelligent quick wit.
"He was able to write meaningful statements in a succinct manner, which resonate in his body of work.
"We are truly grateful to all concerned that David is getting this amazing honour of having a blue plaque.
"He would have been both humbled and thrilled.”
Guernsey Museum have collaborated with Guernsey Arts to curate an exhibition celebrating David Robilliard's works.
"Welcome to the Friendly Isle” is open until 31 December 2025.
