Guernsey joins calls for peace in Gaza

Guernsey's Chief Minister has written to the UK's Prime Minister to express support for ending the war in Gaza.

Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez has sent a letter addressed to Sir Keir Starmer saying the 'suffering and starvation' seen in Gaza is 'unspeakable and indefensible'.

She says the island community supports a recent joint statement from the UK and international partners, which calls for an immediate end to the war.

"Members of the Government of Guernsey are profoundly concerned by the deaths and suffering of innocent civilians in Gaza, including through the destruction of critical infrastructure and restricted distribution of humanitarian aid.

"Further, the members are deeply moved by the plight of people of all ages who are caught up in any conflict.

"The members hope that the global community soon finds and implements effective ways to protect civilians, alleviate human suffering and secure lasting peace."

The letter follows a push from David Dorrity, who rallied politicians together to ask Policy and Resources to express a joint dismay over the famine reported in the region.

Deputy de Sausmarez's statement comes a week after Jersey's Chief Minister, Lyndon Farnham, wrote to the UK's Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, calling for urgent action in Gaza.

In December 2023, Guernsey's Overseas Aid & Development Commission donated £50,000 to Christian Aid to help people in Gaza.
