Guernsey mums launch money saving initiative

Founders of 'SuperSavvySavers' Sarah de Carteret and Kat Gillespie

Kat Gillespie and Sarah de Carteret want 'SuperSavvySavers' to help islanders during the cost of living crisis.

SuperSavvySavers is designed to be a centralised database for all the deals and discounts being offered around the Bailiwick's shops and restaurants.

Kat Gillespie and Sarah de Carteret have launched Facebook and Instagram pages, after noticing price rises themselves.

"I wouldn’t go so far to say that we’re struggling, but I have started to budget and meal plan more, and the kids certainly get way less treats than they did a year ago.

We thought, well, if we are doing this then a lot of other people might be as well."

The duo have gained over 500 followers since they launched their social media pages, and plan to develop an official website soon.

There they plan to post price comparisons of the Bailiwick's six main outlets - M&S, Waitrose, Co-op, Alliance, Iceland and Morrisons.

They will cross-check the cost of 25 everyday items such as bread, eggs, and vegetables.

Kat hopes this will serve as a guide for shoppers, and inspire change:

"Some supermarkets that are a little bit pricier, once they see their prices compared, in black and white, and up on a website it might be an eye-opener for them.

They might feel the need to reduce prices a little bit."

The ‘SuperSavvy’ website will also highlight the services offered by local charities.

"We have some great blog posts lined up already including a review of local charity shops, how to save on your household bills, how to get fit for free, how to use the Repair Café, where to find help and support, as well as budgeting and meal planning."
