Guernsey Pancake Day fundraiser cancelled

There will be no pancakes served from Town Church on Pancake Day.

For more than a decade, islanders have flocked to the Town Church on pancake day to get a sweet treat and donate to a good cause.

With less than a week to go, the organiser and beneficiary, Guernsey Cheshire Home, have cancelled this year’s event.

Home Manager Mary Ellen Carter says electrical work inside the church, where they'd usually set up their temporary kitchen, is due to last until 18 February - the day after pancake day.

Volunteers tried to find another venue, but decided it was best to skip a year.

Mary says it’s unfortunate to miss out on the income, but the event will return in 2027:

"Considering we have to raise six hundred thousands pound every year, every event we do is really important, but also making sure people know who we are and what we do is also very important, and this is always a good opportunity for that.

"This would have been our sixteenth year, and we have been increasing our fundraising on the day.

"Last year, it was about seventeen hundred pounds - that is a significant amount for us to lose out on.

"So it is very unfortunate to cancel."

Islanders can still support the home through their website.
