Guernsey pupils asked to design marine sculptures for national initiative

Primary school children in Guernsey are being asked to design giant marine-themed sculptures that can help reduce the amount of plastic waste on island beaches.

A collaboration between Clean Earth Trust, Nature Commission, and The Guernsey Institute, 'Fill a Fish' is an award-winning initiative that addresses growing concerns around marine ecosystem damage by plastics.

Children between the ages of 4 and 11 across Guernsey are invited to design and create these sea-life sculptures, encouraging and enabling people to dispose of their plastic waste responsibly.

The successful designs in the Isle of Man

Winning designs will be selected by a panel of judges and brought to life by engineering students at The Guernsey Institute.

They will be supported by Mark Pratt, Head of the Engineering Department, and Guernsey artist and lecturer Mark Cook, before finding permanent homes in key locations around Guernsey’s coastline.

Fill a Fish was first launched in the Isle of Man in 2022, and since then, more than 80,000 plastic bottles have been collected from the Island’s beaches and coastlines.

There are two categories: The Little Starfish category, for 4 to 7-year-olds, and The Deep-Sea Adventurers category, for 8 to 11-year-olds.

Angela Salmon from the Guernsey Nature Commission says the sculptures in the Isle of Man have cleared 80,000 plastic bottles:

"They've been really successful, they raise awareness of pollution in the sea that absolutely shouldn't be there. These sculptures are a way of throwing away plastic in a good way.

"The winning designs will be made into sculpture that will be placed around the island

"It's amazing, these sculptures potentially could be around our coastline for 10 years, which is absolutely incredible for the children if they're the designer."

The deadline for entries is 13 June 2025
