Guernsey Town scaffolding causes problems for visually impaired

Members of the Guernsey Blind Association have been sharing stories about the obstacles they face when navigating St Peter Port.

This week, the Guernsey Blind Association has been raising awareness of people who use long canes to help them navigate on walks.

Members have been sharing their stories online and highlighting difficulties that may be more prevalent in Guernsey.

Simon says his cane gives him the confidence to leave the house on his own, adding that one of the main obstacles is scaffolding.

Orientation and mobility instructor, Chantelle Tucker, hopes islanders will be considerate.

"There are several different types of visual impairment, and it affects everyone differently, so just be courteous.

"Step out the way if you see them approaching, and offer them assistance if they seem like they might be stuck.

"Scaffolding can pose an issue. The long cane is trained to detect ground-level obstacles in front of you, which can pose a tripping hazard, push bikes, street furniture, but something like scaffolding your cane can easily go underneath it."

There's a walk through St Peter Port this Saturday (17th October) to boost Long Cane Awareness.
