Guernsey's Castle Cornet to close early for bridge replacement

Parking spaces to go or be re-designated as £6.2M project is on track to begin in early September.

Commuters and users of the Castle Emplacement will see changes over the coming weeks to enable the bridge to Castle Cornet and the lighthouse to be rebuilt.

Joe Armstrong, the project engineer from Guernsey Ports, says a team has been repairing and strengthening the original granite anchors:

"These piers have supported access to Castle Cornet, the breakwater and lighthouse for more than 150 years.

"By strengthening and retaining them, we're preserving an important part of the bridge's heritage, while reducing the need for unnecessary reconstruction.

"Completing this work means we are well prepared for the main phase of reconstruction to begin as scheduled in September."

To enable the work to go ahead, which is expected to last until late May '27, Castle Cornet will close early for the season on 6 September.

Joe Armstrong stresses there will be no public access to the Castle, breakwater or lighthouse and people are asked to keep away from the works compound and temporary bridge:

"The bridge and surrounding work area will be closed to the public, but access to all businesses on the Castle Emplacement will be continue throughout the reconstruction period.”

Some parking spaces will be lost because of works access and storage.

The harbour viewing area alongside Boatworks Plus will become two hour disc parking.
