Guernsey's loss making leisure centre at a crossroads

A sustainability report shows Beau Sejour is ageing and need extensive repair or rebuilding.

The Sustainability Review says that Beau Sejour has been central to Guernsey life for 50 years, but that it has reached a crossroads.

Mechanical and electrical plant equipment is ageing and need to be replaced and the building is not energy efficient nor completely accessible. This is despite work to rebuild and renew sections over the years.

Added to that, the pool and gym are in high demand, while other parts of the centre are underused.

The report says Beau Sejour needs to adapt to changing lifestyles and become more of a community hub offering a wide range of activities.

Inevitably, whatever happens, money will be needed. Currently, the centre runs at a loss of around £1M a year, which is partly topped up by CI Lottery money.

Deputy Paul Montague heads up Education Leisure and Culture which co-produced the review:

"The Beau Sejour redevelopment is included within the States' Major Projects Portfolio, and the Committee now begins the work of progressing it.

"That includes testing both the potential and the appetite for change.

"The review is clear on one thing: there is a real, evidenced need for investment, and simply doing nothing is not a viable long-term strategy."
