New housing development to support Guernsey residents with disabilities

Fourteen purpose-built one-bedroom flats have been created to help disabled islanders live more independently.

La Vieille Plage is a housing project designed to support islanders with physical and learning disabilities.

The Guernsey Housing Association development has 14 one-bedroom flats, each with its own kitchen and bathroom, as well as shared communal areas.

There are also dedicated staff facilities, including an office, overnight rooms, and a therapy space to support residents’ well-being.

The site, in the Vale, has been designed with input from Health & Social Care to help residents with different needs live as independently as possible.

Construction was announced in 2023 and was expected to be completed in the summer of 2025.

GHA Chief Operating Officer Lisa de Kooker says the site will improve lives.

"La Vieille Plage is a specialised housing development that has been designed entirely around the people who will call it home.

"Every detail of the building has been carefully considered to support independence and dignity, with care delivered in a way that works for residents and not limited by the building itself.

"We are incredibly proud to have worked with HSC to deliver this for the island.

"It’s really exciting to have people move into a place that has been created just for them, where they can feel supported, build their independence and enjoy a better quality of life."

Head of Health and Social Care Deputy Dr George Oswald, says the project completion is an achievement.

"Projects like La Vieille Plage show what can be achieved when we design services around the needs of the people who rely on them.

"By working closely with the GHA, we’ve been able to create a purpose‑built environment for those with complex needs that enables residents to live more independently, supported by a space that truly works for them.

"I’m grateful to everyone involved for helping deliver something that will make a real difference to people’s lives."

The flats are being fitted with specialist equipment, and residents are expected to move in soon.
