New installation could save lives at Guernsey’s bathing pools

The placement of a rescue throw line is being trialled at La Vallette.

The Guernsey Sports Commission says a person can drown in as little as a minute, so rescuers need to be able to act fast.

The organisation has paid for a throw-line unit to be attached to railings at the Ladies' Pool.

It says the location will reduce emergency response times and benefit swimmers both inside and outside the pools.

Outdoor and Adventure Sports Development Officer, Alan Jenner, asks islanders to keep an eye on the red unit, as they are concerned the water could wash it away.

"We hope that in some small way, providing this throw line at one of the Island’s busiest and most popular swim spots will improve safety in the area.

"They really can save lives!

"The challenge is in seeing if it will survive being submerged for half the time and regularly pummelled by the waves."

If the throw-line trial is successful, the Sports Commission says it will look for sponsors to buy more and install them around the island.
