Islanders will be able to receive Free NHS Emergency Care when visiting the UK from 2023.
The new Reciprocal Health Agreement between the Bailiwick and the British government has been signed.
This means from 1 January islanders visiting the UK can get free emergency NHS care, and in return, British visitors here get the same treatment.
Planned health treatments and operations will not be covered.
Policy and Resources unanimously approved the new RHA at the July States meeting.
Guernsey's Chief Minister, Deputy Peter Ferbrache, met with the UK’s Minister of State for Health, Maria Caulfield MP, today to officially sign the documents.
Deputy Peter Ferbrache says both jurisdictions should be happy with the outcome of negotiations:
"A new Reciprocal Health Agreement has been a priority for many in Guernsey for some years, both politically and within the community, due to the social and economic links between the Bailiwick and the UK.
The new arrangement will bring great benefits to residents of both the Bailiwick and the UK, making travel easier in both directions for family, business and leisure purposes."
The UK Minister of State for Health, Maria Caulfield, says this is a landmark moment for the residents of Guernsey:
"None of us can plan for unexpected medical emergencies, so I am delighted that those travelling from the Bailiwick have this additional peace of mind when they travel to the UK.
This arrangement is a testament to the strength and close cooperation across the British family."
The previous agreement ended in 2009 and was not renewed since there was little appetite from the British government, and it cost Guernsey around £500,000 to run each year.
The UK's exit from the EU changed that and helped with negotiations.
