Guernsey’s Economic Development Committee has confirmed it’s exploring the possibility of a new link to London Heathrow.
There has been media speculation around the issue all week and now Economic Development head, deputy Sasha Kazantseva-Miller, has confirmed they are in talks with a potential operator:
"It is a matter of public record that our Committee, following work from the previous Committee of which I was also a member, has been looking into a new route and examining options.
"While I can say that talks with a potential operator are ongoing, it is also clear that such commercial discussions should remain confidential.
"When there is something more concrete to say about our work in this area, please be assured we will proactively communicate it to the community."
Aurigny is on the record as saying that London City could go as a result of the competition.
The Guernsey Hospitality Association has welcomed the idea, saying a direct connection to Heathrow would send a strong message that the island “is open for business.”
Chair Alan Sillett says Jersey benefits from a Heathrow link.
"Jersey’s experience has already demonstrated its impact. Independent analysis there showed an annual economic benefit of around £123 million.
"Even allowing for scale differences, a Guernsey link to Heathrow could deliver £20–40 million a year in wider economic activity.
"Route development is not simply a subsidy for an airline — it is an investment in Guernsey’s future prosperity.
"With operating costs and taxes rising across the board, Guernsey urgently needs to build confidence and stimulate growth."
Flybe began a seasonal Heathrow link in March 2019, subsidised by government, and the first from Guernsey in 20 years.
It did not continue beyond March 2020.
