Presidents Being Picked

States members are back in the Royal Court for the third time in four days to pick who they want to lead the government committees.

The newly-elected deputies are choosing leaders for Economic Development, Education,Sport and Culture, Employment and Social Security, Environment and Infrastructure, Health and Social Care and Home Affairs.


The appointments follow the election of Deputy Peter Ferbrache as President of Police and Resources,  He beat Gavin St Pier by six votes.

The States then supported his choices of Heidi Soulsby, Jonathan Le Tocq, Mark Helyar and David Mahoney to form the P&R committee.

The theme of fresh leadership is expected to continue across the committees. The previous president of ESC, Matt Fallaize, former Environment & Infrastructure president Barry Brehaut and Mary Lowe, who was president of Home Affairs all failed in their bids to be re-elected.

Michelle Le Clerc, the previous head of Employment & Social Security has retired from politics and former Health President Heidi Soulsby chose not to continue in the role.

Deputy Charles Parkinson has told Island FM he hopes to continue in his role as President of Economic Development and face the challenge of rebuilding the island's economy post-pandemic.

Deputy Neil Inder, who led the States Assembly and Constitution Committee last term, is expected to challenge for the position.

The presidents for Scrutiny, Development and Planning, Overseas Aid and Development, the States Assembly and Constitution Committee, the States Trading Supervisory Board and finally the Transport Licensing Authority will also be chosen.

Deputy Gavin St Pier has announced his intention to stand for the STSB.

Committee members will be chosen on Wednesday.
