Prospective election candidates to get an insight into Guernsey politics

People considering standing in the June 2025 election can learn more about what it means to be one of the island's deputies at a special drop in tonight, 16 April.

A number of current deputies will be on hand to meet prospective candidates at Beau Sejour between 5pm and 8:30pm tonight.

The meet and greet is organised by the States Assembly & Constitution Committee. Its president, Carl Meerveld, says it is important to know what the job entails:

"It will help inform people about the responsibilities, powers and the role of a deputy and how we serve our community. It's to make sure that they are properly prepared for the commitment, because it is a significant commitment.

There will be different deputies available at different times. I will be there throughout but will let my colleagues do most of the talking."

Some commentators have highlighted the riffs in Guernsey politics, although under the new P&R they seem to be healing. Deputy Meerveld says his committee will address this with the next political intake:

"If there are any ways that we can help assist a more collegiate approach in the future States, the SACC committee will try to promote that."

There is a second drop-in session on Saturday 20 April at St James Café in St Peter Port between 10am and 1pm.
