Schools in Guernsey reopen but minor roads remain blocked following Storm Goretti

Guernsey's States say access to the Castel school and Les Beaucamps is affected by road closures caused by fallen trees.

The decision was made early on Friday to keep the schools closed in the aftermath of Storm Goretti but they are open as usual today, Monday 12 January.

The Castel parish was badly affected by storm damage and fallen trees mean diversions to get to both the parish school and Les Beaucamps.

There is no car access at the Mont D’Aval end of Rue de la Masse due to work to repair the damaged road. The only driveable route is the road around St Germain.

For Les Beaucamps High School, Rue des Deslisles is closed and trees are down in the nearby lanes.

The school bus network to these schools will be affected as a result.

Education say there's damage to parts of the pavement around Les Varendes High.

Saturday's fine weather gave islanders the opportunity to make minor repairs to their homes and gardens.

Guernsey's tree surgeons are still working at full capacity and Police are urging drivers to heed road closure signs to keep workers safe.

Roofing firms have been reporting hundreds of calls to repair significant or minor damage.

Driving around over the weekend, the extent of the damage to the island's trees was visible at almost every turn, with many huge trees uprooted or fractured.

At Les Vauquiedor, below the hospital, several cars still lie damaged under a huge fallen tree.

The overall clear up may yet take months.
