Guernsey Police say any risk was minimal after a member of the public brought in a small, unexploded device to the Police Headquarters.
Last month, a JESSC call handler received a report of a 'suspicious object' on the L’Ancresse Golf Course.
Treating it as a sharp object, the person was advised to bring the item to the St Peter Port Police HQ for safe disposal.
It turned out to be a mortar bomb, more than likely a German 50mm or 80mm device from World War Two.
As a precaution, the reception area was evacuated.
Guernsey Police say Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers removed the item and destroyed it later the same day, at a safe location:
"Clearly it is not protocol to ask members of the public to bring unexploded ordnance to police headquarters, however in this instance the item was not correctly identified by call handlers over the phone and the wrong advice was given.
"The nature of the object means the risk was still minimal to anyone involved.
"If you come across anything that could be unexploded ordnance, contact police on 01481 222 222 and our EOD team will respond.”
