A Spitfire performed a flypast over Alderney to mark 80 years since a German gun battery was shelled by a British battleship.
The Spitfire managed to avoid the fog yesterday (12 August) to fly over Platte Saline beach, near Braye Harbour, and perform some aerobatics while hundreds looked on.
It was to mark 80 years since a Royal Navy battleship, HMS Rodney, fired more than 70 shells on a German gun position on Alderney.
A Spitfire was used to spot the target on the German occupied island and feed back information to the ship, anchored on the far side of the Cherbourg peninsula.
The action, where a British ship fired on a British island, came about because guns in the middle of Alderney had begun firing on American troops at la Hague, just eight miles away.
The flypast came at end of Alderney Week.
