Sixth Form Centre To Move To LMDC

Guernsey's post-16 education will begin operating out of La Mare de Carteret High School site in September 2025.

The States warned last week that its decision to withdraw from a partnership with builders R.G Falla would result in delays to the construction of the new Les Ozouets campus.

With the physical build no longer be possible within the previous timeline, the States has today announced a plan to proceed with its re-organisation of 11 to 16 education.

Sixth Form students will be attending La Mare de Carteret High School site in the 2025-26 academic year.

The Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, says this is the least disruptive solution, as most students already change sites after Year 11 anyway.

It hopes the temporary move to LMDC will be for one year.

Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, ESC President, says this decision has been made quickly to reduce confusion and concerns:

"We wanted to share with the community as quickly as possible our plans for ensuring we maintain momentum and continue to deliver the re-organisation of Secondary and Post-16 education agreed by the States.

While it remains incredibly disappointing that we have been forced into a situation where there will almost certainly be a delay to the full opening of the new Post-16 campus, the plan we are developing secures the transition from four 11-16 secondary schools to three 11-16 schools from September 2025 as planned.

Moving the Sixth Form Centre to a temporary home at La Mare de Carteret High School is clearly something we would have rather avoided, but we believe at this stage is the best option to ensure momentum is maintained in other important parts of the re-organisation of Secondary and Post-16 education.”

The States considers the temporary site in the Castel to be the best option because it has been maintained and has ‘sufficient classrooms and specialist spaces to accommodate the Sixth Form Centre temporarily’.
