'Transition' Year GCSE Grades Slightly Down

The first students to sit GCSE exams since 2019 have collected their results, with the Bailiwick's pass rate slightly lower than during Covid but higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Exams regulator Ofqual called 2022 a 'transition' year, and warned students that they intended to bring grades down from the highs of the past two years to be more in-line with pre-pandemic results.

Despite this, 67.2% of students across the bailiwick have achieved at least five GCSES (A*-C), including English and Maths.

GCSEs are now graded 1-9, with 7 to 9 equivalent to the old A to A*, and anything above a 3 is considered a pass.

All students at Elizabeth College achieved six or more passes at grades 9 to 4 including English and Maths, with 63.3% achieving 7 to 9.

Two students earned nine passes at Grade 9.

Principal Jenny Palmer says she is proud of this cohort:

"Particularly considering the challenges of the last two years, this is an excellent set of results which reflect the hard work and commitment of our students as well as the support they have received from parents and our dedicated staff.

The vast majority will now move on to study A levels here and others will undertake a variety of pathways including sporting scholarships and other vocational training.”

The Ladies’ College achieved a 100% pass rate, with 74% of students getting 7s and 9s.

100% of the girls also achieved the highest grades (A*-A) in History GCSE.

Principal Daniele Harford-Fox said this year's hard work is worth celebrating:

"These students were just 13 years old when the first wave of Covid-19 struck, and they have had to manage their learning through immense disruption and uncertainty.

Whilst many of us remember our early teenage years as being light-hearted and perhaps even carefree, that has not been the case for this cohort, and the maturity they have shown has been truly impressive."

92% of students at Blanchelande College achieved at least nine GCSE passes, with 35% achieving higher 7 to 9 grades.

Principal Mr Robert O'Brien says this year's persistence is evident in the results:

"With support, encouragement and the right mindset students can battle through to a positive outcome.

While getting at least five passes is an important milestone for many, I'm delighted for all the students who have received nine or ten passes - or eleven for those taking further maths."

Le Murier Year 11 students also had an excellent year with accreditations and qualifications being gained in functional skills, ASDAN, City & Guilds and BTEC from Entry Level to Level 2.

Vice-President of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, Deputy Bob Murray, says today's results are fantastic:

"After years of learning and teaching in an environment that was anything but normal, I’d like to congratulate each and every student who received their envelopes this morning for overcoming those challenges.

I hope their results reflect the work they have put in. I’d also like to thank teaching staff for their hard work in helping our students through these difficult times."

81.8% of students at St Anne's School in Alderney achieved more than five GCSEs, including English and Maths - which is more than triple their pass rate from 2019.

Headteacher, Wendy Wilson says she is very proud of her students:
