Vale Douzaine to host two emergency sleeper pods for Guernsey homeless

The Guernsey homelessness charity Caritas has submitted a planning application to install two emergency sleeping pods in the Vale Douzaine car park.

Caritas announced its intention to build a modular housing community for islanders facing homelessness back in September 2024.

While the charity continues to search for an appropriate site for this project, it stated that a more immediate solution was needed for people who have nowhere safe to sleep.

In April, it announced it had the funds to buy two sleeping pods, designed by the UK charity Amazing Grace Spaces, but needed somewhere to put them.

The Vale Douzaine has offered the use of its car park.

If planning permission is given, the pods could be in place by October.

They would take up a parking bay each, and include a sleeping space and a toilet.

They work entirely off-grid, using solar panels for power.

Caritas Guernsey Chair, Graham Merfield, says everyone deserves dignified overnight shelter.

“These pods are not a final solution—they are a compassionate and practical step while we work towards building a community of modular homes in Guernsey.

"Until then, we cannot turn our backs on those sleeping rough.

"Everyone deserves shelter, safety, and dignity."

Vale Douzaine commented:

“The Constables and Douzaine of the Vale believe this initiative is a valuable and meaningful response to homelessness in Guernsey.

"We fully support the project and are pleased that our grounds can be used to help provide immediate, practical support to those in need.”

Caritas says it will support pod users to find longer-term accommodation.
