2020 Jersey Marathon Called Off

This year's Jersey Marathon has been cancelled because of restrictions on mass gatherings.

The 15th annual event was due to take place on 4 October, but it can no longer go ahead because controlled events remain at no more than 40 people.

Organisers say the safety and welfare of participants is their primary concern and they're fully supportive of the government guidelines put in place to keep islanders safe.

"This decision has not been taken lightly and we recognise this is hugely disappointing for those of you who have been training for the event.

"All registrations will be automatically transferred to the 2021 event. Runners will receive further details in the coming weeks.

"We are however working hard behind the scenes on exploring alternative options for our runners in October, to ensure they can still get out and run their chosen distance, and continue to support local charities, who have been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic."

A record 2,500 runners took on last year's Marathon to raise money for the JSPCA and Futuremarkers.

Event sponsor Standard Chartered is aiming to raise $50,000,000 by 2023 to tackle inequality and 'increase economic inclusion' for young people around the world.

It's the latest event to be cancelled by coronavirus-related restrictions. The 2020 Weekender Festival won't go ahead this year either.

There is still uncertainty over whether the Jersey Air Show will go ahead.

Organisers of that event are waiting on expert health advice on whether they can run the show this year.
