Childrens' Parish Policing Mural Unveiled

Jersey Police have unveiled a new mural designed by local school children.

Over the summer holidays, hundreds of children took part in the 'Policing in My Parish' competition to draw a picture inside the outline of their parish showing the work officers do in their community.

The 12 winning entries  - one from each parish - have been pieced together, forming a new artwork for Police Headquarters. The winning designs were created by:

Last night, the 12 children and their families were invited to the Police HQ for a guided tour and to see their artwork unveiled:

Acting Deputy Chief, James Wileman, and Jersey Police Authority Chair, Jason Lane, revealed the artwork.

The visitors also got to meet the Police dogs and see behind-the-scenes areas such as the inside the island's Emergency Services control room.

"I put a police dog and a police car and a police badge and a policeman taking a naughty person away." - Callum Walker, St Helier.

"I drew a police dog on the airport conveyor belt and I also did the police officers checking everyone's bags in security." - Orla Brady, St Peter.

Acting Deputy Chief Officer, James Wileman, came up with the idea after visiting Greater Manchester Police, who had completed a similar outreach project.

He told Channel 103 it's a great way of ensuring young people have a positive relationship with the Police:

"We continually try and break down barriers for police contact with children and I want every contact that children have with the police to be a really positive one, so we did the same here with Jersey! We broke it up into 12 parishes, we went to the 12 parish schools and encouraged the schools to take part, which they did. We're so pleased with the result.

"You can feel it in the room. The kids are thrilled, the parents are proud and we as a police service are delighted."
