Coronavirus: More Measures To Save Jobs

Hotel, restaurant and bar workers at risk of redundancy because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic are being offered temporary contracts to work in other sectors.

Local agency GR8 is working alongside the Jersey Hospitality Association to help employees find other roles so they can stay in Jersey and return to their business once the crisis is over.

Temporary employment contracts have been drawn up and are ready to use.

Association Chief Executive Simon Soar says it's a creative solution that's badly needed, while also warning that drastic new government measures are needed in the next 24 to 48 hours to stop some Jersey businesses disappearing.

“I am encouraging anyone who needs people to meet any gaps while their staff are self- isolating or have to look after their families to get in touch, even if it’s only for a few hours. It’s 75 years since the island last faced such a serious crisis and I hope Islanders haven’t forgotten what it is to be a community that looks out for each other.”

Sandpiper CI has requested 45 staff for its outlets in Jersey.

Alliance and Randalls have combined to redeploy staff. Workers from the pub chain are moving to the supermarkets from today.

Customers are being asked to be patient while the team 'learns the ropes'.

*Al fresco fees will be waived for St Helier's hospitality trade during April and May.

It's among measures introduced by the Town Hall to encourage support for local businesses through the coronavirus pandemic.

Delivery drivers will be given free permits so they don't have to pay or risk a fine and local suppliers who were booked for parish events that have been cancelled will be asked to supply their services at a later date, instead of the parish seeking refunds.

“We have listened to local businesses in St Helier and responded to what they’ve told us. This package of very practical immediate measures works alongside and complements Government’s proposals, providing support for our businesses and Islanders’ livelihoods, as well as helping to meet the needs of St Helier residents in this difficult time.”

I know from conversations with parishioners and businesses that there are also concerns about this year’s rates bills. Rates bills are, of course, not due for several months yet. However, I understand these concerns and will be discussing them with my fellow Constables over the coming days and weeks.”  - Constable Simon Crowcroft

*Jersey's Police Chief insists the force 'will be here for you' as the impact of coronavirus continues to grow.

Robin Smith, who sits on Jersey's Emergencies Council, says plans are in place with brilliant people here to deliver them.

He's also called on islanders to follow government advice:

“I know that the vast majority of Islanders are being responsible in following the Government’s guidance. After all, the medical advice is clear - it will save lives.

However, I'm also aware that some are choosing to ignore it and are putting vulnerable people at risk. Self-isolation for travellers returning to the Island from outside the UK is vital to contain the spread of the virus and reduce demand on essential public services.”

*Overseas islanders with British passports who need help to return home are being encouraged to contact Jersey's External Relations department.

The department is working with the UK Foreign Commonwealth Office to make sure staff there are aware of Jersey residents in need amid the ever increasing travel restrictions being put in place because of coronavirus.

Jersey residents who don't have a British passport can contact the diplomatic mission in the country where they're based for help.

External Relations Minister Senator Ian Gorst says UK authorities will explore all possible options to get British nationals home, but this will take time.

*Grieving islanders are being asked not to hug or shake hands.

Funeral Directors Pitcher and Le Quesne has issued guidance - saying services should be limited to close family .

All funerals will now take place at the Crematorium or at the graveside and not in churches - which remain open for prayer, but where all  public masses have stopped.

*Over 65s and islanders with flu-like symptoms are being urged not to visit government buildings.

Customer and Local Services is asking people to call or go online.

Anyone unsure of whether they're eligible for income support is advised to use the online calculator.

*Caring Cooks is diverting its resources to provide a community meal service for all islanders in need during the Coronavirus crisis.

The local charity, which normally works with children, is appealing for funding to extend its Weekly Meal Service to six days a week to help a wider group of residents.

Distribution points will be set up across the island.

Meanwhile, Age Concern is adding a daily hot meal service to its lunchtime rounds from next week following strong demand.

*Youth Clubs across Jersey will close after tonight.  The service is shutting down its evening sessions to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The YES project drop in service will remain open, and counselling can be provided via Skype or Facetime.

Other services that will continue:
·         Young Carers project will continue in small groups or online
·         Missing young people Return Home Interviews will continue with health advise given during interviews
·         Increased street sessions in St Helier and St Brelade
·         Youth Workers to be based in parishes to maintain links with parish support networks
·         Youth Workers allocated to work online to create daily tasks, challenges, quizzes and activities

*LibertyBus will no longer accept cash payments on the bus or at the customer service desk.

Users should use AvanchiCard, contactless or card payment only.
