18 jobs reportedly lost as Jersey Airport 'Executive Lounge' closes to passengers

18 staff working at Jersey Airport are understood to have been warned that their jobs will be lost when the downstairs Executive Lounge closes next month.

Channel 103 has learned Airline Services had previously been told its lounge on the gate pier would remain open, despite the upstairs viewing gallery being renovated into a new premium lounge, operated by No.1 Lounges.

The company has previously acted as a ground handling agent for several airlines operating in and out of Jersey Airport, working with the airline that lent its name to the Executive Lounge, British Airways, since 1996.

Swissport took over ground handling operations for BA in 2022, but the local firm continued to provide other services in Jersey, including running the Executive Lounge.

The Airline Services-run lounge is located between Gates 2 and 3

It's understood that the airline recently agreed with No.1 Lounges to have its passengers use the new upstairs facility, despite plans already having been drawn up to renovate the existing Executive Lounge next to Gate 2.

Staff at Airline Services were reportedly offered the roles working for the new No.1 Lounge, but declined to take up the opportunity on the understanding that the downstairs lounge was being retained and refurbished.

A spokesperson for Ports of Jersey said: "Airline Services has provided a valued lounge service at the airport for many years, and Ports of Jersey would like to recognise the significant and positive contribution they have made to the passenger experience throughout that time.

"The new No.1 Lounge is already proving popular with passengers and is focused on showcasing the character and essence of the island to travellers. Built by a local contractor and employing a fully local team, the No.1 Lounge offers a range of local produce in partnership with a wide range of local suppliers.

"We understand that British Airways has taken the decision to use the No.1 Lounge from October. As the agreement is between No.1 Lounges and IAG (BA's owner), Ports of Jersey is unable to provide any further details."

When asked about the changes, British Airways and IAG declined to comment.

Channel 103 understands the downstairs Executive Lounge is due to cease operating on Saturday 18 October.

The airport spokesperson added: "Our focus is on ensuring passengers continue to benefit from high-quality lounge facilities at the airport and providing help to any affected employees where possible.

"We are working with all of our airport partners to identify any job opportunities for the Airline Services staff who are important and valued members of the airport community."

Ports of Jersey is said to be "still in the early stages of reviewing options" for the space currently occupied by the Executive Lounge, with it likely forming part of the wider airport redevelopment plans.
