22 year old walks the length of Ireland for three charities

Jersey man Billy Benrock is taking on a mammoth challenge to raise money for three charities.

22-year-old Billy Benrock is walking the length of Ireland to raise money for Macmillan Support Jersey, Dementia Jersey, and The Irish Heart Foundation.

He's going the distance between Malin Head to Mizen Head, taking a route from north to south covering around 1,000km.

He is logging his walks on Strava and on social media, and hopes to finish next week.

He says he's been covering up to 40km (25 miles) per day. through all sorts of weather, to complete the challenge.

Channel 103 spoke to him from Ireland:

"It's a very tough mental battle, getting up every day, whether it's raining, which it usually is in this country at this time of year, or the sun is shining, and just waking.

"And it can sometimes feel like you're going nowhere.

"It's hard to pick just one charity, and I thought for something that's going to take me 50 days, something I've got a big target for, maybe I could help multiple charities out."

Billy has been posting the sights he has seen on his journey on his social media

When Billy's mum was diagnosed with breast cancer, he says Macmillan Support Jersey helped not only her, but the family:

"They were absolutely amazing with her treatment, advice, information and settling into the new normal, which I think is really hard after diagnosis.

"Even for me, my sister and my dad - how we can help her through her treatment.

"The Irish Heart Foundation is for my dad and his side of the family, and then Dementia Jersey - I think having someone you love not know who you are is very sad.

"Anything that you can't cure, you can only make people comfortable, is tough to get your head around."

Billy hopes to raise £10,000.  You can donate to Billy's fundraiser here.
