Attempt to block town skate park fails

The skate park in the reversing bays at South Hill will go ahead, despite an appeal to block it.

A planning application was approved by the former Planning Committee in March.

South Hill skatepark gets green light

But the decision was challenged through a third-party appeal, which was reviewed by independent planning inspector Fortune Gumbo.

In reviewing the appeal, he considered the adequacy of the consultation process, the impact on heritage assets, highway safety, and the effect of on nearby residents.

He recommended that planning permission should still be granted.

The proposed development is for a phased construction of a skatepark and cycle park.

Phase 1 includes installation of skatepark equipment; resurfacing; fencing and screening; soft landscaping; accessible toilet with baby change facility; covered cycle parking; street furniture; lighting; CCTV; and associated utility infrastructure.

Phase 2 includes the removal of the skatepark equipment and resurfacing of the area to form a cycle park.
