A property developer is calling for a 'fundamental review' of Jersey's planning system after challenging the government over its refusal of Les Sablons.
After a year-long wrangle, Le Masurier's £120m plans for nearly 240 homes and a 103-bedroom hotel in St Helier were eventually approved on the last working day of 2023, with work set to begin in the coming months.
Managing Director, Brian McCarthy, told Channel 103 that the government should do more to support private projects that align with ministers' strategic priorities.
"I'd like to see a fundamental review of the entire planning system and further scrutiny over planning decisions.
We've got a couple of applications pending which will be submitted early in the new year. We are very keen to monitor and track the progress of those applications, in light of the experience we have had with Les Sablons.
I would like the government to take a firm stance on major projects that meet the government's priorities. They should be prioritised.
There should be a ranking for planning applications, with priority for large applications that are going to bring many, many benefits for the island."
