After confusion over the weekend, Jersey's new ferry operator has confirmed how they will transport horses on their fleet.
On Friday, a letter from DFDS to a horse owner - shared with Channel 103 - stated the operator would not accommodate the animals on any of its ferries when it takes over Jersey sailings from Condor Ferries at the end of March.
"We regret to inform you that we are unable to facilitate the transportation of horses. This decision stems from various logistical challenges and safety considerations that exceed our current capacity.
"Transporting horses is indeed a complex task that necessitates thorough planning and authorization from the captain of the vessel."
It prompted concern from the equine community.
Roisin Wood, Director of Island Equine Vets, was concerned that sick horses would have to be 'put down' without the vital link to UK hospitals, and that the sector would suffer economically.
There was also concern from horse owners for those who compete and represent the island overseas, and for the racing sector on-island.
Channel 103 then saw a separate email - also from DFDS' Customer Care team - sent in response to to another query from a horse owner. It read:
'I am pleased to inform you that we do indeed handle the transportation of horses, which is fantastic'
We contacted operator for clarification and have since received the following:
'The statement from DFDS on social media was incorrect and they are contacting the poster to advise them accordingly. Horses can be accommodated as freight on vessels.'
