Easier tax refunds for visiting shoppers in Jersey

Visitors to Jersey will be able to claim GST back on more of their shopping more easily from next month.

It's part of an attempt to make the island a premier shopping destination and get tourists buying more, tax-free.

Holidaymakers will be able to claim back the 5% Goods and Services Tax when they spend more than £100, rather than the current threshold of £250.

Also from July, the refund will be fully digitised, with kiosks at the airport and harbour for departing passengers to submit their receipts.

The government has partnered with Swiss based tax-refund firm Global Blue on the Tax Free Shopping scheme, hoping it will be a boost for retail and tourism.

Economic Development Minister Kirsten Morel says it's an important step to making Jersey a more competitive destination

"By modernising how we offer Tax Free Shopping, we’re supporting both our local retailers and hoteliers, removing potential barriers to business, and giving people more compelling reasons to choose Jersey."

The move aims to lure visitors to snap up clothes, cosmetic, watches and jewellery free from both the 20% VAT that applies in the UK, and Jersey's own 5% tax on shopping.

It will not apply to Jersey residents or nationals.

To be eligible for the refund - minus a 'small admin fee' - shoppers will need to present their passport and leave the island within 31 days of their purchase(s).

Global Blue will manage the tourist refund, and claim the GST directly from the government.

A new app will guide frequent visitors through the process, while there will be a customer care system for less regular shoppers.

Derrick Hardman, Global Blue Regional COO: “We’re proud to have partnered with the Government of Jersey to launch one of the world’s most advanced and digitally-driven Tax Free Shopping schemes.

"This milestone marks a significant step forward for the island’s retail and tourism sectors, and we look forward to supporting Jersey in unlocking its full potential on the global stage.”

Global Blue will be working with retailers this month who are interested in joining the scheme this month, with a webinar and in-person event at the government offices on 16 June.
