Explained: Choosing The New Council Of Ministers

With Lyndon Farnham elected as Chief Minister Designate, the next positions to be decided are his 11 Ministers.

Deputy Farnham must give the Greffier of the States a declaration of the States Members he wishes to nominate for each role by 9:30am on Monday (29 January).

In a meeting the following day, States Members have the opportunity to nominate their own preferred candidates.

If the challenger wins, Deputy Farnham can alter his line-up - for example putting his losing preferred candidate into a different ministerial job.

Each nominee will give a speech for up to ten minutes, followed by up to twenty minutes of questioning.

Candidates for the same Ministerial office will not be present for speeches or question time.

The Assembly then votes on roles that have multiple candidates.

If there is only one candidate for a role, or if a candidate receives more than half the votes, they are automatically appointed.

If not, the candidate with the lowest number drops out, and the vote is cast again.

Once all eleven ministers are appointed, the Chief Minister Designate officially becomes the Chief Minister.

You can follow the outcome of the Ministerial elections on Channel 103 from 9.30am on Tuesday.
