Family-run Portuguese restaurant to close after 30 years

Barros' Tropical Bistro is closing after three decades of serving Jersey.

The restaurant first opened on Colomberie in 1995 and later found its home on the corner of David Place, where it has been ever since.

Due to the building's lease expiring, manager and chef Michelle de Barros has decided to close its doors for the final time on 20 December 2025.

She says she cannot thank their customers enough and that she is looking forward to focusing on her family and spending time with them.

"We've been around for a long while, and I've tried to carry on my dad's legacy.

"We've been very lucky and very fortunate to have such a loyal client base, and we can't thank our customers enough and we will miss them and I hope they'll miss us too!

"In the hospitality industry, you don't have much time to [spend time with family], unfortunately.

"At the moment, we will be closing our doors, but I always say it's something I can go back to."

Michelle was brought up around the family business and took the reins in 2010.

"[I've] always been around it, always helping my parents even when I was at school and carried it on for them."

In terms of where the sector is at the moment, she says it is a very 'tricky' industry to work in at the moment due to rising costs, but changes to the law, including drinks deals, are a step in the right direction.

"We're very blessed in Jersey, on such a small island, we have so many options, and it seems like there are lots of places opening up new, which is absolutely amazing.

"I'm actually looking forward to being able to go to restaurants that I can't go to and close on the same days that we do.

"Obviously, it's tricky now for locals to go out, times change, and people are finding everything a bit more expensive, but I think Jersey's lucky and I think people will still go out and have a good time and eat and drink because that's what people over here like to do."
