FNHC gets £800k grant for digital health monitoring tool

A government grant of almost £800k will support Family Nursing and Home Care in delivering a digital monitoring system that can track health and alleviate potential problems before they arise.

A CareTech grant of £795,000 over two years will go towards the development of a remote monitoring technology platform ‘Luscii’.

The system will allow patients and their clinical support team to track key health data using a range of devices.

It hopes to 'transform' community healthcare delivery in Jersey, particularly for the elderly and those with frailty and long-term conditions.

The aim is to reduce health complications, identify potential issues before they arise, and alleviate pressure on the emergency services and the hospital.

In year one, it will monitor the incidence of falls.  Then, in the second year, it will be expanded to the management of diabetes and complications with wound care.

These are conditions that often lead to hospital admissions amongst Jersey's elderly population.

Rosemary Finley, CEO of Family Nursing and Home Care has been telling Channel 103 more about the project:

"The system will be used for people who have an onset of frailty. It will enable our nurses to review their vital signs to determine whether or not they need a visit that day, or plan a visit going forward.

"It will use artificial intelligence to support all of the data coming from a sensor that the individual will have on their person.

" That will send things like a pulse, respiratory rate, temperature - different vital signs  - to a system which will check those against their benchmark for that person.

"If there's any alteration or change, we can review those and respond."

The CareTech Challenge, funded by government and delivered by Digital Jersey as part of the Impact Jersey initiative, was launched with a £2m pot available to innovators developing tech solutions to improve the lives of older people and health outcomes.
