A former scout leader has been jailed for 18 months after being found guilty of child abuse.
Beverly Colley, 56, was found guilty of two counts of common assault, and two counts of causing harm to a child, following a five-day trial in March.
She was sentenced at Jersey’s Royal Court today (28 May).
Detective Inspector Christina Maclennan, head of CID, said:
"The States of Jersey Police welcome the sentence passed down by the Royal Court today.
“It re-enforces that violence and abuse, especially against those who are vulnerable by way of their age, is not and should not be tolerated.
“These historical offences caused serious and lasting harm to the victim and the impact continues to be felt today.
“We commend the victim’s courage in coming forward, supporting a police investigation and ultimately seeing the case through to a Royal Court trial
"Today’s verdict reinforces that violence and abuse in any form are never acceptable and will not be tolerated.
“Any reports made to the States of Jersey Police, no matter how long ago they occurred, will be fully investigated with support and guidance offered and provided by our partner agencies."
In a statement, the Scout Association said:
"Keeping young people safe is our top priority.
"These offences took place outside of Scouting. Colley was suspended from Scouts in April 2024, and her membership has since been cancelled.
"We carry out rigorous vetting of all adults who work with young people and require them to follow a strict code of conduct."
