Jersey's government will be asked 'to lead by example' and only use and buy products that don't contain palm oil.
Palm oil is a major driver of deforestation and the loss of habitat to many species - such as orangutans, rhinos, and elephants.
It is widely-used in a variety of everyday products including food, cosmetics and detergents.
St Martin Constable Karen Shenton-Stone (pictured below) wants the Council of Ministers to agree to stop using any products that are made using palm oil.
She's also asking for clear labels showing whether products made in Jersey contain palm oil, which she says would be a step in the right direction to allow Jersey shoppers to make environmentally-friendly choices about the products they buy.
The Environment Minister would be asked, if this is approved, to start an island-wide campaign that raises awareness around its use.
Constable Shenton-Stone says action on palm oil could be the first step towards a wider goal - which is to develop a 'sustainably resourced island' which could warrant global recognition.
"This proposition aims to set Jersey on course to reduce the amount of palm oil it consumes by developing awareness of the substance and highlighting the global impact of how it is produced, so that Islanders can make environmentally-conscious decisions about what they buy wherever it is practical and affordable for them to do so."
