Guernsey Has A New Leader

Deputy Lyndon Trott is Guernsey's new political leader after States Members voted they had lost confidence in the island's leadership under Deputy Peter Febrache.

Deputy Trott returns to the role of Guernsey's de facto Chief Minister for a second time, having previously held the position between 2008 and 2012.

He was voted in as President of Policy and Resources on Wednesday (13 December) after three rounds of a secret ballot in Guernsey's States, beating Deputies Peter Roffey, Rob Prow and Charles Parkinson to the senior position.

The change in the top of Guernsey's government comes as a result of a motion of no confidence brought in P&R committee led by Deputy Peter Ferbrache.

It had been brought by Deputy Parkinson, who argued that the top committee had failed too many times to gets its tax reform plans approved.

The indecision has led to major projects being stymied because of uncertainty over how a projected £100m hole in public finances will be filled.

The vote to oust P&R was 23-16. Two committee members had already resigned before the outcome.

Jersey's Chief Minister has sent a message of congratulations to her new Channel Island counterpart:
