Island Games team gears up and gets ready at Government House

The 2025 Jersey Island Games team has kicked off the celebrations at Government House.

125 athletes and team members gathered at Government House yesterday (25 June) for an official reception.

They heard from sponsors and the Lieutenant Governor, who wished them good luck and well done... and was impressed with the stunts of some young gymnasts.

Morag Obarska, General Team Manager, hopes everyone can head to the Games to enjoy themselves and perform to their best:

"The next time the whole team is together will be in Orkney.

"We had a lovely evening, some of the team had never met before, so that was nice for them to see who else was going and have a little chat together.

"We've got a real mixture of age groups - we've got a few under-18s, so it will be their first games - our two youngest athletes are our water-carriers.

"We've got some older, more experienced athletes who will be looking forward to going to Orkney and meeting old friends."

Postie James will be competing in the half-marathon.

Jersey Post is sponsoring the team kit and helping to transport the team equipment to Orkney.

One of their own, postie James Oliver will be competing for the first time in the half marathon event, aiming to complete the course in 1 hour 11 minutes. He came third in the Jersey Marathon last year.

Two Jersey posties, Alan and Toby, will be driving delivery vans over 1,400km over two days to get bikes and other equipment to the event.

Meanwhile, Jersey mountain biker Jay Cracknell is still determined to compete in the games despite emergency surgery for a burst appendix earlier this month.

He says he is currently resting up:

“I’ve trained hard for many seasons. Hopefully, I can get back on the bike as soon as my body is ready and do what I can to put on a good performance in Orkney.

"This is just a reminder that even when you're in great shape, things can change fast.”

Silver medallist triathlete Claire Forbes is Team Jersey's flag-bearer, and young gymnasts Amalie Manton and Jayden Barry will be the water-carriers.

The week-long event will be held in Orkney this year from 12 – 18 July.

It will bring together thousands of sportspeople from 24 islands to compete in 12 different events.

Jersey has athletes in all sports except golf and badminton.

Princess Anne will attend the opening ceremony.
