Children in Years 1 and 2 in Jersey have voted for the books that inspired them most.
The winning book was Nibbles the Book Monster, by Emma Yarlett.
Local title Oddsocktopus, by Christian Foley, was runner-up.
Literacy charity Every Child Our Future has announced the winning title in its Children’s Choice: Book of the Decade celebration to mark its 10th anniversary.
Launched in January, the Children’s Choice project gave children a genuine voice in choosing the stories they love.
Ten primary schools were given a curated collection of picture books published between 2016 and 2025 – the decade Every Child Our Future has been working in Jersey.
The shortlisted books were:
• The Girl and the Dinosaur by Hollie Hughes
• Colin’s Castle by Holly Swain
• Aggie and the Ghost by Matthew Forsythe
• The Night Gardener by Terry Fan
• The Wild Robot on the Island by Peter Brown
• Smelly Peggy by Helen Stephens
• The Man Who Didn’t Like Animals by Deborah Underwood
• Bathe the Cat by Alice B. McGinty
• Nibbles the Book Monster by Emma Yarlett
• Oddsocktopus by Christian Foley
CEO Cris Lakeman told Channel 103 about the winning title:
"What Nibbles particularly likes to nibble is books! He disrupts some traditional tales. He gets into Goldilocks and the three bears and causes havoc. He frees Grandma in Red Riding Hood, much to her annoyance!
"A lot of the time children get adults choosing for them, but this was about them saying which one they like the best.
"Reading is a very unique and individual thing and different people like different books, and we want children to understand that and to say, 'I like this one because...' and have that book talk.!
Each participating class has received a full set of these shortlisted titles, with 200 brand new books being given to local schools.
A copy of the winning book will be given to every school.
