Discussions about making the road one-way have been ongoing for nearly a year, after safety concerns were found with how narrow it is.
In February 2024 trials were pushed back while the new Infrastructure Minister considered other options.
Constable Andy Jehan says he has spent time analysing traffic flow in the area.
"At the bottom of St John's Road, there is a real issue with the size of the road for two-way traffic. I have had a number of people contact me about the challenges they face on almost a daily basis.
I have been personally to have a look at it. I have made a point of driving up and down the road at busy times rather than using Queen's Road, to see for myself."
The St John Constable wants to change the direction of traffic.
"We were due to do a trial a few weeks ago but I was new in post and I wanted to find out about the detail. Something I know about is transport and traffic, and we are going to do a one-way trial but it is going to be southbound.
Traffic will be able to come down New St John's Road to Cheapside but it won't be able to go up St John's Road.
People who want to go up the hill can go up Westmount, they can go up Roussel Street, Undercliffe Road, Queen's Road - there's a number of alternatives. I think the traffic flow lends itself to the northbound area being closed rather than the southbound."
Plans to trial the one-way system southbound could be ready in time for the May half-term.
