Jersey Fire and Rescue Service and Island Energy were called to reports of a 'loud bang' and 'strange odour' at the bottom of Pier Road in the early hours of this morning (14 August).
The emergency services were called at around 1.40am to the roads junction with Mulcaster Street after nearby residents were woken by what sounded like an explosion.
Many people took to social media in confusion.
"Anyone know what the bang was in town ??!!"
"It woke me up in terror it was so close&loud
..sounded like a gun shot..there were 2x the second not as loud as the first. I waited for sirens but there weren't any so assumed it was left over fireworks??"
"I thought the worst (explosion) but when I didn’t hear any sirens I was like was it at sea or something?! Scared the life out of me!"
Gas engineers were also called out due to reports of a 'strange odour', but nothing was found.
A fatal explosion killed 10 people on Pier Road in December last year.
