Man jailed for importing nearly £600k worth of cannabis in bumpers of his car

A 39-year-old Essex man has been jailed for attempting to smuggle cannabis into Jersey by hiding it in and around the bumpers of his car.

Andrew Chard has been sentenced by Jersey's Royal Court this week to four years and eight months for the importation.

On 16 March 2026, 24 kilos of cannabis resin were found in his Peugeot when he arrived on the ferry from Portsmouth.

A Jersey Customs and Immigration Service Expert Witness estimated its street value as £593,000.

Chard pleaded guilty to the importation charge when he first appeared in court.

JCIS Senior Manager Luke Goddard said:

“This is a significant quantity of cannabis and the criminals involved would have made a substantial financial profit.

"This is a great example of the diligence of the JCIS Officers concerned in both finding the drugs and investigating the offence, resulting in the successful conviction of the criminal importing the cannabis."
