Man jailed for series of violent assaults

A man has been jailed for nearly four years after a series of violent assaults in Jersey.

Matthew Sidney Chmielinski, 22, also breached a Community Service order put in place in March 2025 after previously being dealt with for a separate violent assault.

In the early hours of 21 October 2025, Chmielinski forced his way into a house in St Helier, where he committed an assault. He pushed them onto furniture, pulled their hair, and repeatedly hit their head against a wall.

Back in May 2024, officers found a man outside a house with facial injuries and evidence of damage to the property, including a smashed window.

Chmielinski was found unresponsive inside and after being treated, he was arrested on suspicion of grave and criminal assault and malicious damage.

Whilst under arrest in hospital, he also spat at a police officer.

Jersey Police say this case 'highlights the serious consequences of persistent violent behaviour and failure to comply with court-imposed orders.'

Detective Constable Howgate, Officer in the Case from SOJP’s Criminal Investigation Department, said:

"This was a series of violent incidents which caused significant injury and distress to the victims involved. Our officers responded promptly, secured key evidence, and carried out a thorough investigation to ensure the offender was brought before the Court.

"Violence of this nature will not be tolerated in our community, and we will continue to take robust action against those responsible to protect the public from harm."

He was senteced to three years and nine months behind bars.

A restraining order of five years was also imposed.
