No Fan Zone In Jersey For Euro 2020 Final

A big screen was put up for the 2018 World Cup semi-final, but there won't be one for this year's final.

The government has announced that a fan zone will not be held in Jersey for Sunday's Euro 2020 final between England and Italy.

It followed 'intensive discussions' between the government, the Bailiff's Public Entertainment Panel, and third-party suppliers.

A government spokesperson says a number of compounding factors worked against putting this on, 'given the very tight time-frame'.

There were concerns over putting effective safety measures in place, given the continued rise in Covid-19 cases and the risk of onward transmission.

"I would like thank officials from across Government, the Bailiff’s Public Entertainment Panel and external contractors, who have worked intensively over the past 24 hours, in the hope an event could be agreed and delivered. It was important for us to attempt to organise this event, given the local interest and the desire to bring our community back together after the challenges of the pandemic, however it is simply not the right time. We would only be able to provide a public fan zone for the final if we could guarantee all COVID-19 mitigation measures were in place, and this could not be achieved in the timeframe.

"I would encourage all Islanders who are watching the match with friends on Sunday to do so safely. Please maintain social distancing. And if you are watching inside a public location, please use tracking apps, and follow enhanced hygiene measures. They are there to protect us all." - Senator John Le Fondre, Chief Minister.
